BAHAMAS
The Bahamas is an island group in the Caribbean, east of the state of Florida (U.S.) and north of Cuba. Since 1973, it has been an independent country with its own government, within the British Commonwealth; it’s primary language is English. Queen Elizabeth II is the head of state. There are some 700 islands, only 30 of which are inhabited, including Andros and Grand Bahama (with the city of Freeport). The capital Nassau is located on New Providence Island. Many famous movie stars and musicians have a country house or private island in the Bahamas. They know where the life is good; it’s not a secret any more…The Bahamas is a well-known tourist destination with beautiful palm-tree lined beaches and a relaxed atmosphere. The climate is tropical, there is a fresh sea breeze and the sea temperature never falls below 20 degrees Celsius. Rain showers can occur throughout the year, especially during the hurricane season from June to October. On the beaches near the capital Nassau and on Paradise Island, the water is crystal clear and excellent for fishing, windsurfing, snorkelling, diving and parasailing. The soil on the islands is stony, and is home to maritime pines and tropical tree species, such as mahogany, and palm trees. In gardens and parks you will see many species of tropical flowers and shrubs. There are also dry areas and swamps, but no high hills or mountains.
The capital Nassau is frequented by cruise ships. Famous attractions include Fort Charlotte, Bay Street, Straw Market, Adastra Gardens and Zoo and the Pirates of the Caribbean museum.
Hotel Atlantis includes an extensive shopping mall. You will find the latest French and Italian fashion, Cuban cigars, trendy bags, children’s clothing and toys. Aquaventure is a spectacular water park with a wild water river and even a water slide from a replica Mayan pyramid. The resort has several water slides, beaches, swimming pools, restaurants, nightclubs and sports fields.
The Bahamas offers spicy food, especially seafood, shellfish, lobster and crab, in addition to the usual international fast food outlets. A famous local dish is conch (fried fish). If you want to go sea fishing, no problem at all!
Andros Island and Grand Bahama are popular with birdwatchers and divers, and the Exuma Cays Land and Sea National Park has been preserved in pristine condition since 1958.
On the islands, they drive on the left, public transport is limited, but you can take a taxi or rent a car. Water taxis and ferry boats operate between the islands and there is a great deal of air traffic. From Nassau there are day trips by boat to the smaller islands, the “Out Islands“. You can also take trips by plane to Miami, the Disney parks and the Kennedy Space Center in the United States.
