INDIA
India is a country in Asia bordered by Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar and Bangladesh. India became independent from the United Kingdom in 1947. The country’s most well-known cities are Mumbai (Bombay) and Delhi. India’s diverse population comprises many ethnic groups. The country’s primary religions are Hinduism and Islam. A country very rich in nature, India has deserts, cave systems, mountain ranges, beaches and jungles within its borders, and is also home to a wide variety of wildlife, including lions, tigers, panthers, apes, elephants and whale sharks. Mumbai – known as Bombay until 1995 – is India’s largest city and commercial capital. The city is widely known by its nickname of Bollywood, a portmanteau of Bombay and Hollywood. The city is home to the largest film industry in the world, with more films being produced here than anywhere else. When in Mumbai, you just must see Crawford Market, the city’s premier market. The city of Agra is home to the Taj Mahal, one of the most famous buildings in the world and often considered one of the wonders of the world. This beautiful, white marble building was built on the instructions of Emperor Shah Jahan to commemorate his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. India’s densely populated, hectic capital city of Delhi shows the great divide between poor and rich. Delhi is made up out of two parts: New Delhi and the older town. New Delhi is a modern business centre and home to the president. The Connaught Place vicinity sports many good restaurants and modern shops. Old Delhi is home to bazaars, mosques, monuments, museums, temples and forts. India is a massive country, home to many other interesting cities, including Jaipur, the ‘Pink City’, or Goa with its lovely beaches.
