NETHERLANDS
In the Netherlands you can do more than just visit family and friends and go shopping! For music lovers there’s the North Sea Jazz Festival, Rotterdam’s Summer Carnival, various film and music festivals, Kwaku and other events.Cities each have their own atmosphere and character, Amsterdam with its 18th century canals and the modern international district of Zuidoost are popular with tourists. The painters Rembrandt and Van Gogh have their own museums; the Rijksmuseum has a diverse historical collection; the Anne Frank House is world famous. If you’re not keen on museums, take a boat trip around the canals or a stroll through one of the many parks.
In the surrounding area you will find Waterland, Volendam, Hoorn and Edam with their old Dutch houses and costumes. In spring, a visit to the blossoming bulb fields is a favourite. Alkmaar is the city of the famous cheese market, but there is even more to see!
The Hague is the administrative centre with the Binnenhof, royal palaces, broad avenues and historic buildings. The Mauritshuis and the Art Museum, but also Panorama Mesdag deserve a visit, as do the beach and the Pier of Scheveningen. The dunes and the boulevard are wonderful places to get a breath of fresh air, walk, keep fit and cycle all year round. Nearby, you will find Madurodam, where you can see the Netherlands in miniature, and the ‘real’ windmills at the Kinderdijk.
Rotterdam is a modern city, because the historic centre was bombed during the 2nd world war. Here you will see experimental architecture, beautiful bridges, the Euromast and harbours, where you can take a cruise.
Delft, Schiedam and Dordrecht are historic cities in the area.
In the province of Zeeland you will find Zierikzee, Middelburg and the most beautiful beaches in the Netherlands.
Utrecht is a university town with canals lined with wharf cellars and quaysides that are used as terraces in the summer.
Arnhem is a pleasant, spacious city with a great deal of natural beauty and not far from nature park De Hoge Veluwe and the Open Air Museum, where typical Dutch buildings and professions are on display in a forest park. Fun for young and old.
Children like to go to the fairy-tale park De Efteling, in the south.
Modern attractions include Eindhoven, the Philips city, and in Tilburg there are several monuments to Peerke Donders.
Maastricht is situated at the river Maas, in a hilly area. It offers a taste of the ‘southern’ atmosphere and the surroundings are beautiful. There are elegant shopping streets and Aachen (Germany) and Liege (Belgium) are nearby.
Along the river IJssel you will find the pleasant cities of Zutphen, Deventer, Zwolle and Kampen.
In the north, Groningen and Leeuwarden are worth visiting and if you like beaches and the sea you will enjoy your stay on the Wadden Islands.
The best way to discover Holland is by bike, on foot, or by boat. There are many cycling and walking routes, because these activities are in the Dutch blood. They are also great fun for tourists!
