During this 2-day tour you will travel by luxury Tuk Tuk to Peperpot Plantation, where you will spend the night in Boutique Hotel Peperpot. The next day you travel by luxury Tuk Tuk to Nieuw Amsterdam, where you visit the Fort Nieuw Amsterdam Open Air Museum.
The plantation has a long history that is visible by the presence of old plantation buildings. An English planter was the first to arrive at the Peperpot Plantation around 1655 and started a sugar cane plantation. In 1696, Simon van Halewijn came from the Netherlands to Suriname. Plantation Peperpot was founded shortly afterwards. In Sranan Tongo the plantation is called “pepre patoe”. Tobacco cultivation was started. In 1702 they quickly switched to cocoa and around 1720 to coffee. The factory remained in production until 1998. A number of buildings have been preserved.
After the final closure of the coffee factory on the Peperpot Plantation, a secondary forest was created and this forest is now the Peperpot Nature Park. Here you can walk, cycle, canoe and watch birds. The ‘Discovery center’ opened in October 2015, where the history of the plantation is shown through historical images. The Surinamese Cultural Society supervises the maintenance and management of the plantation. Together with the WWF, 700 hectares are protected as a nature reserve. Agriculture no longer takes place on the plantation and the area is largely left to the laws of nature.
Fort Nieuw Amsterdam was a former Dutch fort near Nieuw Amsterdam in Suriname. Its construction started in 1734 and was completed in 1747. In 1907 the fort lost its defensive function and from 1873 to 1982 the fort served as a prison.
The museum is an initiative of Jim Douglas, the district commissioner of Commewijne, in particular, who gave the fort a new purpose. He wanted to develop the area around Nieuw Amsterdam and the fort could serve as an attraction. An open-air museum was built within the ramparts and opened in 1968. Douglas wanted to bring the history of Suriname to the attention of his fellow countrymen in an attractive way.
In the 1980s the open-air museum fell into disrepair. In 2007, the twenty-hectare site was renovated again with Dutch support and the museum was reopened. It attracts 40,000 visitors annually.
