Multi-Day Tour: 2 Days Nickerie & Bigi Pan

Are you a bird lover and do you love open landscapes, beautiful paddy fields, and history? If so, the tour to Nickerie, also referred to as the rice barn of Suriname, and Bigi Pan, a marvellous marshland nature reserve, is just right for you.

Transport
Transport takes place by minibus. The distance from Paramaribo to Nieuw Nickerie is 237 km and takes approximately four hours.

Stay
You will spend the night in a quality hotel in Nickerie. The hotel offers comfortable rooms equipped with air-conditioning, television, telephone, and a bathroom with a shower and toilet.

Facilities
The hotel has a restaurant that also serves breakfast in the morning. You will of course find also various small restaurants in town where you can enjoy a delicious meal.

Day 1
On the first day, you will depart from Paramaribo to the pleasant capital of the Nickerie District, Nieuw Nickerie, where you will arrive in the afternoon and visit the sea wall of Nickerie with a possibility of witnessing a beautiful sunset. While on the road, the vast landscape and the beautiful paddy fields might give you the impression of alternately travelling in Indonesia and the Netherlands. You will stop at the historic site of Groningen. As its name already indicates, this is the site where Dutch farmers landed approxi­mately 150 years ago. Finally, you will visit Wageningen, once the flourishing centre of the rice culture.

Day 2
This day is devoted to visiting Surinam’s largest lagoon; the Bigi Pan nature reserve. You will be introduced to these paradisal breeding grounds for more than 120 bird species by navigating creeks, mangrove forests, and marshlands on a korjaal or dugout canoe. The four-hour return journey to Paramaribo departs around 15:00.
