Day 1: Paramaribo – Jungle Resort Pingpe
When travelling by bus/dugout canoe, you will be picked up at Paramaribo Centre around 8.30 in the morning. By bus, you will drive to the dugout canoe pick-up point Atjoni in about 2.5 hours. On the way, you can already enjoy the colourful culture that Suriname offers you, and you will also pass small villages and settlements of Indians and Creoles. When you arrive at Atjoni, you can stretch your legs and you will be offered lunch. In the meantime, the dugout canoe will be loaded for the boat trip to Jungle Resort Pingpe. After lunch, you sail in about 3.5 hours on the beautiful Upper Suriname River to Pingpe, the duration partly depending on the water level of the river. During the dugout canoe trip, you will see many villages along the river and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. In addition, you will see how the locals go about their daily tasks, such as doing the laundry, catching fish and children playing in the water.
After your arrival at Jungle Resort Pingpe and taking possession of your lodge, there is opportunity to swim in the river or relax on the island. After dinner, you will meet the local staff and the guide will tell you more about the Saramaccan culture, the language, interesting facts about the island, the surroundings and the programme for the next day.
Day 2: Hiking through untouched nature and authentic villages
After a big breakfast, you will hike through the unspoiled jungle with your guide, past the villagers’ fields. During the walk, the guide will inform you fully about the various (medicinal) plants, trees, animals and customs of the jungle. In addition, you will see how the villagers grow their food with hard work on their land. In the afternoon, you will return to the resort where a delicious lunch will be waiting for you. Before or after lunch, you can take a refreshing dip in the river. In the afternoon, you sail to the village of Pingpe to meet the inhabitants of the villages Pingpe and Semoisi on a village walk. You will see how people live here and what activities fill their days. You will also visit the local primary school, where children from both villages receive their education.
After dinner, you will take an evening river tour in the dugout canoe. The guide makes the canoe flow with the current of the river, so you can enjoy the silence of the jungle, as well as the beautiful sounds of the jungle, the starry sky and the sighting of caimans.
Day 3: Enjoying the splendid rapids and cultural encounters
After breakfast, you will take a dugout canoe to the village of Asindohopo, situated on the Pikin Rio. This is the village of the Granman. You will take a village walk and visit the local radio station. After the walk, you will sail to the beautiful Tapawatra Sula (rapids), where you can swim and enjoy a natural massage bath. On one of the rocks in the sula, you will have a picnic lunch. On the way back to the resort, you and your guide will visit the Djumu health centre, which is a central medical post for the surrounding area. In the afternoon, there is time to recover from the morning, paddle to a creek or have a swim in the river. After dinner, the locals treat you to an evening full of culture: song, dance and rhythm are the key words of this evening. The ladies from the village become more and more enthusiastic as the guests join in on the evening. (For 4 persons and more)
Day 4: Jungle Resort Pingpe – Paramaribo
When you travel back by dugout canoe/bus, you will depart for Atjoni after breakfast. Downstream you will navigate this in approx. 2.5 hours. In the boat or at Atjoni, you can enjoy another delicious lunch before transferring to the bus. After a bus ride of about 3 hours, you will arrive in the centre of Paramaribo.
This is the standard programme of Pingpe for 4 days, but 3 or 5 or more days at Pingpe is also possible.
