In the extreme virgin south of Suriname on the border with Brazil, is an area inhabited by indigenous people and characterised by unspoilt jungle, wild rivers, mountains, caves, beautiful savannas and rare species. On the eight-day trek, you’ll see it all!

Transport
From the Zorg & Hoop Airport in Paramaribo, you will fly in approx. 2 hours to Kwamalasamutu.

Stay
Your stay is in simple, open camps. You sleep in a hammock and the toilet is the nature around you.

8-Day tour

Day 1
Departure by aeroplane from Paramaribo at about 10 am. Arrival Kwamala: 12 pm. After taking residence in the traditional hammock camp on the banks of the river, we visit the Gramang, the Great Chief of the Tiriyó Indians. In the afternoon, we take a village walk and learn about the different traditional tribes and their customs and day-to-day life

Day 2
We get ready for a boat trip to Sipaliwini after breakfast. By noon we arrive at the bivouac camp. There will be the opportunity for fishing, swimming or just relaxation.

Day 3
After striking camp and having a good breakfast, our trip continues to Sipaliwini where we arrive around 1 pm. In the afternoon, we meet the village chief and the local residents. We spend the evening together in a camp along the Sipaliwini river where we also sleep.

Day 4
We leave for Mamia on the Sipaliwini savannah after breakfast, in search of the rare, blue poison dart frog, the Dendrobatis azureus, or okopipi, which is only found in this area of Suriname. We then walk for about 1.5 hours to the top of the Vier Gebroeders (‘Four Brothers’), where there is a formidable view across the Sipaliwini savannah as far as Brazil. In the afternoon, we return to camp on Mamia where we stay the night.

Day 5
We travel by boat back to Sipaliwini, where, after a short pause, we begin a jungle walk to the cocks-of-the-rock birds. In the afternoon, we learn to use a bow and arrow and we swim in the river. A cultural show in the evening with song and dance from a local group is possible on request.

Day 6
After breakfast, we prepare for the adventurous journey over the many rapids to our next camp. In the evening, we can enjoy the stars in the sky and the night-time sound of animals in the jungle, like frogs and howler monkeys. There will even be a boat trip in the dark to spot caimans, frogs and snakes, etc.

Day 7
Vertrek uit basiskamp en daarna een boswandeling door de adembenemende natuur naar de grotten van Werephai met de pas ontdekte petroglyfen (rotstekeningen). Deze grotten zijn in 2001 ontdekt en zijn tussen de 5000 en 10000 jaar oud. Na een korte stop op Iwanasamu varen wij naar Kwamalasamutu voor de laatste overnachting. In de middag kan men indien gewenst een bezoek brengen aan de Sjamaan of naar het vrouwencentrum voor het kopen van souveniers.

Day 8
Return trip to Paramaribo.
